The pro wrestling world is filled with stories of Brock Lesnar’s toughness. He is one among the few athletes to have dominated not just one, but two sports. Alongside tasting success in pro wrestling, Lesnar dabbled in mixed martial arts and has a 5-3 record in MMA from nine matches. The 46-year-old is legitimately tough. But before he showed the UFC fans his toughness inside the octagon, the WWE Universe was already privy to this trait of his. According to a 48-year-old WWE legend, the company carefully planned this portrayal of The Beast’s image, which had his full involvement.
Matt Hardy recently shared an incident that involved a young Brock Lesnar in the WWE in his rookie year, 2002. Hardy’s account showed how Lesnar was willing to do anything to appear tough.

Though Lesnar made his WWE debut on the Raw after WrestleMania episode in 2002, it wasn’t till Backlash that he featured in a televised match. His first opponent was Jeff Hardy, Matt’s younger brother. Lesnar locked horns with the current AEW star at the April 21, 2002 marquee event, winning it. But before they met in an official match, Lesnar was at the receiving end from the brothers.
On an episode of RAW in April 2002, The Hardy Boyz attacked Lesnar inside the ring. The segment is memorable as Lesnar took two brutal chair shots to his head. Speaking on his ‘The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy’ podcast, the 10-time Tag Team Champion in WWE said it was Lesnar who asked them to hit hard during an interaction backstage.
Hardy said as it was Lesnar’s rookie year, he was under pressure from the producers of the segment to make it look realistic. This was to make Lesnar look tough and intimidating. The 25-year-old kept on coming to the seasoned stars and asked them to hit him hard. Sensing Lesnar’s doubts, Hardy assured him and asked him to not worry.
After the spot was executed, Lesnar came backstage and took the brothers on the side. “…he says ‘How was it guys? Everything good, right?” Hardy said. He added that Lesnar didn’t have a full recollection of the events. This could have been due to a concussion he might have suffered during the spot.

“So, yeah. That was a wild story. Quite a memorable moment in our career,” he said. This was, however, one of the moments of toughness from The Beast Incarnate. Years later, he did something that proved Lesnar still had it in him.
Brock Lesnar goes color at Backlash 2023
At Backlash 2023, Brock Lesnar took on Cody Rhodes in their first of the three encounters. The PLE in Puerto Rico saw Rhodes win after Lesnar busted himself open.
He hit an exposed steel turnbuckle after The American Nightmare removed the padding. Blood oozed from Lesnar’s forehead as he conceded his advantage to Rhodes, who won with a flash pin.

While many were confused, with no WWE officials rushing to stop the match, reports later stated that it was the former WWE Champion’s pitch to go color.

This shows that Lesnar still isn’t afraid to put his body on the line just to make the match look legitimate. Years have passed, the WWE has gone through several changes, but Lesnar’s penchant for toughness has remained intact.
