Did Sami Zayn's recklessness almost end Ilja Dragunov's career, or was it just bad luck?

The Underdog from the Underground has catapulted himself into the top of the fans’ graces. Sami Zayn‘s 2024 season has been remarkable so far. He won the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania XL against Gunther. Ending his legendary 666-day reign. Now he is defending it with honor. At Money in the Bank, WWE’s last Premium Live Event, the Underdog from the Underground defended the title from Bron Breakker. While on the following episode of RAW, he was brutally attacked by Young Steiner. But the Tsar later rescued him.

However, a clash between the Canadian and Russian wrestler surfaced last night. Sami Zayn and Ilja Dragunov gave life to a very heated battle. Not sparing themselves at all with blows and showing their impressive skills. However, neither of them could prevail, as Bron Breakker attacked them and ended the match in a no-contest. But despite Breakker’s attack, it seems like it was Zayn who might’ve caused more hurt to Dragunov. A recent clip on social media has grabbed a lot of attention while providing more criticism towards Sami Zayn’s in-ring work.

In a recent clip on Instagram, fans can get to witness a particular spot from last Monday Night Raw’s matchup between Zayn and Dragunov. The two wrestled at the corner of the ring. That’s when the Intercontinental Champion tries to suplex Dragunov. Only for the Russian superstar to fall on his neck and spine region. Something that truly could’ve led to a disastrous outcome.

In the caption, the user wrote that Sami Zayn should leave the WWE before anyone else gets injured. “You can take the talent out of the bingo halls but you can’t take the bingo hall out of the talent. If there’s 1 person that I wish would leave the wwe and go be elite, it’s sami. The WWE would be better off without him.” The feeling was seconded by other users who were also reminded of his other botches that could’ve ended his opponent’s careers. Like the one botch against Gunther as one user wrote, “His botch piledriver on the top rope to gunther at WM is a great example of what not to do.”

However, some users believed that it was Ilja Dragunov at fault and not Zayn. As a user wrote, “If u watch when Sami does the move he plants the opponents foot or feet on the mat first, they’re suppose to flip bump meaning a regular front flip and try to back land it. Ilja either couldn’t jump or just didn’t want to for the move to look good.” They also mentioned how Zayn is a veteran of the sport with about 22 years of experience.

A top-level career for the Canadian began several years ago. Before he arrived in WWE in 2013, Sami Zayn made a name for himself in the world of independent wrestling under the nickname El Generico. With the mask on his face, he fought some of the best matches of the first decade of the new millennium. Including the ones against his friend/rival Kevin Steen, known in WWE as Kevin Owens. But this surely is one match that he would want his fans to forget. Unlike the one against Gunther, which he wants the fans to remember for ages.

Last April, during the celebration of WrestleMania XL, Sami Zayn and Gunther faced each other in a match for the Intercontinental Championship. This fight was considered one of the best of the entire event and was highly appreciated by the fans. During WWE’s visit to Saudi Arabia, Sami Zayn was interviewed by Arab News. There he spoke about the importance of his match. Zayn mentioned that he is very satisfied with what they both offered in the ring and hopes that fans will remember him forever.

He said, “I feel like the hardest thing to do nowadays is to have a memorable match and memorable moments that people will remember, oh, two, three, four, five, maybe even 10 years down the road. And I feel like that match (against Gunther) was good. If nothing else because of how long he held the title. I feel like it’ll be very well remembered. So I’m very proud of that.” Only time will tell if this fight will be remembered in the future. However, as we have previously mentioned, fans considered him one of the best of the event.
