The Fox era of SmackDown had a promising start with the debut of Cain Velasquez. The UFC legend made a huge impression on the debut episode of SmackDown on Fox by attacking Brock Lesnar.
His eventual run was a total disaster, with Lesnar dismantling him in two minutes at Crown Jewel. In an interview with ESPN’s Ariel Helwani, Rey Mysterio reflected on Velasquez’s WWE stint.

Cain Velasquez’s career in WWE spanned only a few months
Rey Mysterio was asked about Cain Velasquez’s future in wrestling. He said, “I can’t dig into the exact situation with Cain. I do know for a fact that he’s very dedicated, he’s very passionate about lucha libre and about wrestling, I know this was one of his biggest dreams to be a part of the WWE.”
Rey Mysterio accompanied Cain Velasquez to the ring in his first appearance. He even walked out to Rey Mysterio’s music.
Velasquez was there to avenge a brutal attack on Mysterio by Brock Lesnar and really took the fight to the Beast Incarnate. Lesnar had just won the WWE Championship in an eight second match against Kofi Kingston.
“I honestly don’t think that he’s gone for good. I think he’s going to make an appearance and a comeback. It’s very hard to put a mask on someone that has created their own history within the UFC like Cain.”
Velazquez’s run with the company came to an end after WrestleMania 36. The alleged budget cuts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic led to his release.
