Last year, Cody Rhodes tore his pectoral muscle while training for a Hell in a Cell match against Seth Rollins. He somehow managed to wrestle in his big match but had to take several months off the television to recover from his injury afterward.
This year he made his successful return and even won the 2023 30-men’s Royal Rumble match to secure a title shot at WrestleMania 39. His recovery journey was not an easy one, and he gives credit to two NXT talents who helped him to push through the difficult times.
One of those NXT stars recently responded to Rhodes’ comments on his recovery statement.

Carmelo Hayes says Cody Rhodes has taught him a lot
Speaking in an interview with BT Sport WWE, the former NXT Cruiserweight Champion stated he had not expected that The American Nightmare would ask for his and Joe Gacy’s help in his recovery training. He stated that when Rhodes asked for his help, it kind of surprised him.
The 6’2 wrestler is a top star in WWE. And he has a ton of friends in the main roster who he could have gone to ask for help. But he went to the NXT division stars to ask for their assistance. The two-time NXT North American Champion claimed it is because Rhodes wanted to “build a relationship with younger talent.”
Hayes stated The American Nightmare always mentions how the former has helped him. But in reality, the red brand star is the one who helped the NXT star and many young talents like him by working with them. “He went out of his way, and I think he says for us to help him, but in reality, he helped me more than I helped him,” Hayes stated.
He concluded his statement by saying that he learned a lot of things from The American Nightmare. And both the superstars are really good friends.
