One of the first people who comes to mind when discussing professional wrestling is The Undertaker. Notably, he has maintained a 30-year loyalty to Vince McMahon and is closest to the former CEO. However, there might have been a misunderstanding between them right after the Taker’s debut bout in the company.

The figurehead of WWE, Sgt. Slaughter, remembered a tale about Taker’s debut match in an interview with ‘The Baltimore Sun’. Since it was his responsibility to attract talent to WWE, he also got Taker on board.

While revealing this story, he recalled visiting Vince McMahon’s office and urging him to grant Mark Calaway a tryout. McMahon responded that he trusted him and instructed him to proceed. In Rochester, New York, where Taker competed in his debut match, halfway through the bout, McMahon asked Slaughter over his earpiece, “Where did you find this guy? Send him to my office.”

However, when he informed Taker about this, he thought he did something wrong. In his words, “Mark came out of the ring and asked me how he did, and I said Vince wanted to see him. He thought he did something wrong. We would have meetings after shows to talk about what happened and plan things out creatively. The topic turned to Mark, and Vince said he had an idea for a character name, and he brought up the name Paul Bearer.[H/T: The Baltimore Sun]
