While The Undertaker has been one of the most consistently adored figures in pro wrestling, there have been some people who spoke out against him. Surprisingly, this one was from a life that Mark Calaway, the man behind The Undertaker, left behind in order to pursue wrestling.
His past life involved his hometown and his close friend, Doug Gilbert. Gilbert was a wrestler himself, mainly known for his work with ECW before it was under Paul Heyman or called Extreme Championship Wrestling.

In an interview with Title Match Wrestling, Doug Gilbert said, “Mark rode with me, The Undertaker when he was in Memphis. We hung out together, we made trips. I mean four days a week together and we cried in my car because he didn’t have enough money to put tires in his car. When I went up there, do you know who I was assigned to be in the dressing room with? Undertaker, Bret Hart, and myself.”

“Now here’s a guy that was in Memphis who didn’t have enough money to put tires. That was driving around in escort with bald tires with me every night. When I walked in they said this might’ve not been really good either, I changed my supposed flying day early for the pay-per-view… I walked into the room and said, ‘Hey big Mark, how you doing man?’ I ain’t seen him since he left Memphis, so I figured he’d be nice and cool stuff. He said, ‘Hey’… I thought man, fu** you.”

While Gilbert did win the ECW Tag Team Championships with his brother, his career went into considerable obscurity. Coincidentally, the locker room situation he was talking about in the interview was when he appeared for the 1996’s Royal Rumble.
