When it comes to to winning the major championships in pro wrestling, very few could be put in the same bracket as John Cena. ‘The Cenation Leader’ is already tied with ‘The Nature Boy’ Ric Flair for 16 world championships and many are waiting for his 17th title. But this time the F9 actor has his eyes set on leveling Flair’s 27-year-old record.

Cena returned on this week’s Monday Night Raw and cut a brutal promo on Austin Theory setting up a United States title match at WrestleMania. Moreover, a win in the WrestleMania 39 match against the ‘A-Town’ star could lead him to tie another Flair record.

An over-enthusiastic Austin Theory challenged ‘Super Cena’ for a match at the grandest stage this year. Furthermore, the 25-year-old also put his United States Championship on the line at WrestleMania’s Hollywood return.

If Cena wins the US Title at WrestleMania 39, he will tie another Ric Flair’s championship record that Naitch made 27 years ago. The Nature Boy has won the US title a record six times in his career before it came to WWE. Moreover, his last run came in 1996, which was for 141 days before he vacated it due to suffering a shoulder injury.

Cena has won the US title five times in his career. This championship was the first major title he won in his WWE career. However, the 45-year-old’s last US title reign came in 2015 that lasted for 35 days before losing it to a returning Alberto Del Rio.

Cena has already tied Flair for being a 16-time world champion as per WWE records. Naitch claims he has won the world title 21 times in his career. Nevertheless, if Cena defeats Theory at the grandest stage, he will be on the same stage with Flair for one more achievement tying his United States Championship win record.

The ‘Franchise Player’ put over several modern WWE superstars during his US title reign. The ‘US Open Challenge’ is the highlight of Cena’s last two US title reigns in 2015. If he wins the title again, could he start the ‘Challenge’ once again?

Cena or Flair, who has the longest individual US title reign?

Since being introduced in 1975, the US championship has changed hands many times. Harley Race was the first holder of the title and since then it has kickstarted many careers.

In his six reigns, Ric Flair’s second reign in 1978 lasted for 253 days, while Cena’s fourth reign in 2015 went for 147 days. Flair has held the championship more than Cena in his six reigns when it was known as the NWA/ WCW United States Championship.
