After losing the Intercontinental Championship at WrestleMania 40, Gunther said he had a new priority: the Crown of the King of the Ring. ‘The Ring General’ maintained a dominant pace throughout the tournament, defeating Sheamus, Kofi Kingston, and Jey Uso to advance to the finals in search of completing his destiny. His opponent? Randy Orton.
Throughout his career, Randy Orton has achieved countless championships and recognitions, but something he did not achieve was being called WWE King of the Ring, so he began his quest by defeating opponents such as AJ Styles, Carmelo Hayes, and Tama Tonga. However, Orton will have to wait another year, as he incurred a defeat to Gunther.
But while the Ring General celebrated his win, WWE fans couldn’t help but notice how the ending was botched. This was the penultimate matchup of WWE’s Premium Live Event in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The first exchanges were slow and measured, with both men testing strength for several moments.

In the climax of the match, Orton surprised Gunther with an ‘RKO Outta Nowhere, which somehow just led to a two-count. But then the Ring General surprised the Viper with a crucifix pin for the win. Thus making him the 2024 King of the Ring.
However, Twitter users were quick to point out that the ending of the match had been botched.

Gunther botches the finish to the finale
In order to call it a clean pinfall, both shoulders of the opponent have to be on the mat. However, that wasn’t the case here. Orton had only one shoulder down. Gunther is the latest of 22 superstars to win the King of the Ring in the tournament’s nearly four-decade existence. The last winner was Xavier Woods, who defeated Finn Bálor in the 2021 edition of the tournament. After the match, Triple H was in charge of giving the crown to The Ring General in the center of the ring. In the wake of his win tonight, Gunther gets a shot at the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam.
