‘The Ring General’ Gunther is by far one of the greatest Intercontinental champions of the modern era. He is the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in the history of the WWE. His successful title reign has lasted for 479+ days. While talking about title reigns, another name that comes to mind is Roman Reigns. Reigns has been the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion for 1,130+ days. But a shocking statistic shows that Gunther is more competitive than The Tribal Chief.
Over the 479+ days, Gunther has shown why the title he holds is called the workhorse championship.

Gunther made his WWE main roster debut in April 2022. And just within two months, he defeated Ricochet to win the Intercontinental Championship. This began his undefeated title run which has gone on for 479+ days. Last month, he beat The Honky Tonk Man’s record who was earlier the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion with 454 days.
Thus every day that Gunther adds to that title is a new world record. But another stat that needs to be taken into consideration is that Gunther has defended his title a record number of times during this period. In his reign as the Intercontinental Champion, Gunther has defended his title a 73 times in total. This includes title defenses at live events, TV episodes, and PPV’s.
Gunther has now defended the Intercontinental Title 73 different times across TV/PPV/live events.

This is still a lot when compared to another champion who has held his title for a far longer period of time. Roman Reigns who has held his title for almost three years now has defended it just 28 times in that period. Thus Gunther has 45 more title defenses than Reigns’ who has been a champion for way longer.
