In a recent podcast of wrestling with Freddie, Freddie Prinze Jr. mentioned how Triple H could have become the guy like John Cena that fans see today.
Gradually, ‘The Prototype’ became worthy of the crown of being the nice guy in WWE, but he chose not to develop into that character because he wanted to be in the main events, and John Cena took up the mantle.
Freddie said, “Other guys could have taken it like Triple H could have worn that crown. But Triple H didn’t want to do segments in the first hour of Raw when it was still family-friendly. He wanted to be in the last hour of SmackDown or Raw, and do his DX adult stuff, the stuff that got him over, the stuff that he always did once he found the right character, right?”
“So he could have taken the crown. Vince would have gladly given it to him, but he chose not to. John took this on himself.”

John Cena is one of the top babyfaces of the company. He maintained his gimmick for several years. However, in the early days of his gimmick, fans booed him despite his character in WWE.
For a brief span, fans booed him until Cena made a dominant move. Triple H and Cena battled many times in the ring, which gave a boost to Cena’s in-ring character. Even Cena’s return at Royal Rumble 2008 and eliminating Triple H gave goosebumps to the fans.
