WWE is being targeted by several wrestling fans for ditching Cody Rhodes‘ year-long storyline to pave the way for Dwayne Johnson to “save WrestleMania”. Fans across the internet have shown that they are not happy with the decision to have The Rock main event against his Samoan cousin at WrestleMania 40.
What is bugging everyone more is that the company first let Rhodes win the Royal Rumble and then handed over his feud to The Rock. Former WWE star, Matt Cardona, recently referenced the issue on a show that he was in.

After leaving the Stamford-based company in 2020, Matt Cardona eventually started his own indie circuit. Wrestling fans saw him perform in various promotions. GCW, or Game Changing Wrestling, is also one of his frequent appearances. During the latest PPV for the promotion, Cardona utilized the ongoing heat in the wrestling industry.
On January 3rd, GCW hosted an event called ‘The Coldest Winter 2’. During the show, Cardona had a match against Nic Nemeth, which he lost. The same event also had a segment in which Cardona referenced the current affairs of the industry and said, “I’m not gonna let a part-timer steal my spot! What? Do you think you’re The Rock?!”
He called Nemeth a ‘part-timer’ because, much like the WWE legend, he doesn’t show up in the promotion often. As a result, Cardona connected the dots and seized the opportunity to reference the ongoing hot topic of the industry.

Even though the decision to move Cody Rhodes out of the main event was not made solely by The People’s Champion, he reportedly had a big hand in the same.
Dwayne Johnson pushed for himself to be on the main event
After becoming a board member of the TKO group, DJ gained significant power in the decision-making of the company. Observing how fans were reacting to his return and call out to Roman Reigns, the promotion decided to push this feud further. To play it safe, they also developed The American Nightmare’s feud further at Royal Rumble 2024. However, the company eventually decided that Johnson would be the better fit to main event against The Tribal Chief at Mania this year, something that fans were not pleased about.

However, it recently came out that as a TKO director, Johnson had a role to play in pushing this decision. The reports don’t claim that is was done is order to ‘save’ WrestleMania since ‘The Rock vs Roman Reigns’ is a bigger card for the company to have, as well as CM Punk suffering an injury during the Rumble.
