John Cena has been the face of WWE for over a decade. The 16 times World Champion has been absent from the company for a while now. He was last seen in a match-up with The Fiend, aka, Bray Wyatt in WrestleMania 36. Following Wyatt’s win, Cena just vanished.
Once Cena decides to make his way back to the ring, he will face no shortage of potential opponents. Let’s take a look at five potential opponents for John Cena.
Seth Rollins

Ever since he started his gimmick of the ‘Monday Night Messiah’, Seth Rollins has been in red hot form. The heel turn has gone very well for Rollins, and he is on track to have some great matches.
Cena has always been a face and bringing him back to go toe to toe against the new heel of the company would be exactly what the fans want. Both are great in-ring workers, and their feud would surely be worth a watch.
Matt Riddle
Matt Riddle is a former UFC fighter who made his way into professional wrestling. Riddle has surprisingly grown a lot in a short span of time. His performance in NXT has been reliable, including the cage match he had just a few days back.
Riddle works differently in the ring, and it’s well known that Cena can work with anyone. There is a chance that Riddle might get drafted to RAW and SmackDown. And what could be better than facing the Cenation leader?
Samoa Joe
Samoa Joe made a huge name for himself in Impact Wrestling. He came through the ranks of NXT in WWE. Soon, Joe started having major feuds. He did have some heat with John Cena in the past, but that settled down soon.
They have known each other from initial days as wrestlers at UPW. Since then, both wrestlers have made it big with their respective careers.
Samoa Joe has been out of action ever since he suffered an injury and has taken the role of a commentator for WWE. An excellent way to bring Joe back into the ring could be him cutting Cena off a promo thus setting up their match-up.
Edge
The Rated-R Superstar will only be wrestling a handful of matches per year. He is set to face Randy Orton at Backlash 2020. If Cena was to return in time, he could get into a feud with Edge, with the match taking place at some later PPV, presumably SummerSlam.
Edge returned to the WWE in Royal Rumble this year. WWE Universe has been craving to see more of him in the ring. Him facing Cena would give both parties a boost.
CM Punk

This might seem like a bit of a stretch, but Punk has been teasing his arrival for months now. People assume he is the anonymous hacker seen across WWE television. Punk has had memorable matches with John Cena in the past and seeing them in the same ring again guarantees a great match.
When CM Punk returns, he will be adored by the fans. However, two faces going against each other does not sell well for WWE.

This means that the writers could finally give John Cena the heel turn. A heel Cena against the returning Punk will be a match that will go down as one of the best matches in history.
