In a recent interview, WWE Superstar Finn Bálor spoke about his “Demon King” character. Most notably, he finally revealed the origin of this character and the series of events that led to its creation.
The “Demon King” apparently dates back all the way to Bálor’s days in Japan, where he fought for over 6 years before making his way to WWE. He recalls a match that he was supposed to fight against Taguchi at Tokyo Dome.

He also revealed that he was going to get a paint job to make his character look more like a heel. This is where it all began.
“The paint was kind of like a weird idea it was just it was supposed to be a one solve. I’ve been working like babyface, straight squeaky teen babyface for like 6 and half years in Japan and they ask if I wanna turn heel so I figured ‘ok, I wanna take everything away from them that they recognized me as the babyface,’” says Bálor.
“So like I had already worn the bodysuit and I didn’t really want to change my body too much much. I thought, ’Why don’t I just cover it all in black paint?’”
Everyone thought that It was a bad idea for Finn Bálor
“The idea was that the babyface Taguchi would be wrestling this shadow on the ring. So it was at Tokyo Dome, this big building so from far away it looks like the babyface is wrestling like a shadow,” explains Bálor. “That’s where like the concept of the idea came from and the more I played with it, I found a really good painter to kind of collaborate with in Tokyo. We came up with the first demon character and it was supposed to be a one solve.”
Finn Bálor did manage to pull it off in the end but claims that it wasn’t an easy journey convincing his colleagues that it was a good idea.
“I’ll never forget, I told “Machine Gun” Karl Anderson that I’m gonna cover myself in paint head to toe for Tokyo Dome. He said, ‘Dawg, you’re gonna look stupid. Everyone’s gonna laugh at you. You’re gonna look stupid. The paints gonna go everywhere, you’re gonna look like an idiot.’”
All that time later and Bálor’s Demon King has become one of the most popular characters in WWE. Fans fell in love with it the first time Bálor brought it on. They definitely want it back soon.
Finn Bálor is now still in NXT and is spending his time there for now. WWE may not be employing him to the best of his potential. Bringing him back to the main league in Raw as the “Demon King” would be a great move.
