“F***ing Maddening”: Dusty Rhodes Grooming Seth Rollins Created a Cold War Between Cody Rhodes and His Father

The world could witness one of the greatest comebacks of all time at WrestleMania 38 when The American Nightmare Cody Rhodes made his return to WWE. However, no sooner did Rhodes return than he found himself in a heated rivalry with Seth Rollins.

Rollins and Rhodes always shared a real-life animosity between themselves. And it beautifully played out in front of the audience. Cody Rhodes was very close to his father, Dusty Rhodes. However, something which Dusty Rhodes did years before with Seth Rollins created a cold war between the father-son duo.

What led to the birth of a cold war between the father-son duo of Dusty and Cody Rhodes?

Cody Rhodes has always been particularly close with his father. And he returned to WWE in 2022 to finish the story which The American Dream failed to do. However, during the recent Peacock Documentary, ‘American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes’. The 37-year-old revealed a shocking story about a rising cold war between him and his father.

Rhodes would reveal that during the 2011-12 era of NXT, Dusty Rhodes would start asking Cody Rhodes to quit wrestling. And instead started grooming a future set of superstars mainly, Roman Reigns, and Seth Rollins.

Rhodes stated, “He’s telling me I should quit meanwhile he’s grooming a Seth Rollins. He’s grooming a Roman Reigns. He’s grooming a Sami Zayn. He’s grooming a Kevin Owens. Maddening. fu*** maddening.” 

The American Nightmare further said, “Really just its like he’s got his own little league team and they’re just hitting home runs and I can’t play. The worst and it made me resent all the Dusty’s kids. Made me resent them and made me resent the idea that he would be a mascot for the developmental. It was tough.”

However, the father-son duo evolved well from their cold war and played an effective role during their wonderfully etched feud against The Shield around a year later.

Ever since Rhodes returned to WWE, he has made sure to refer to his father in more or less every promo of his. However, this has a vital reason behind it. After Cody Rhodes was born, his father was able to be there for him, which he could not during Dustin Rhodes’ time.

Dusty Rhodes would even go to the lengths of naming Cody Rhodes, starting a special bond between the father and son. It was the moment their friendship and bond began, and even years after Dusty Rhodes’ death, The American Nightmare makes sure to maintain The American Dream.
