On August 7, Monday, Friedkin left for his heavenly abode while he was at his home in the Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles. His wife, Sherry Lansing – the former head of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood – informed the media that he died of heart failure and pneumonia.

Having gotten his start in the mailroom of a broadcasting channel, he seamlessly adapted to the enthralling world of Hollywood. Despite taking some time to truly etch his name among the renowned directors in Hollywood, he finally made people take notice of the release of ‘The French Connection’ in 1971. The movie earned rave reviews for its enthralling plot and the visceral depiction of New York. The movie secured five Oscars, including one for Best Picture.

Friedkin is credited with introducing the age of “The New Hollywood” along with other visionary directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Peter Bogdanovich, etc. The filmmakers aspired to demolish the old system of Hollywood and introduce edgy content in movies that were made with big budgets.

Friedkin then moved on in developing his next project now known worldwide as ‘The Exorcist’. The 1973 film is largely responsible for revolutionizing the horror genre with its disturbing visuals and themes. Audiences at the time weren’t familiar with the tropes of horror such as jump scares, etc. The movie provoked an immense frenzy in audiences during its release. In a rare instance for horror films, it got nominated for 10 Oscars and bagged two of them.

The late filmmaker enjoyed a glorious career in Hollywood until his untimely death. After the news of his demise went public, CM Punk paid his respect for the deceased star on his Instagram account. He shared a post on his IG story that features Friedkin in different locations, like his set, Oscars, etc. Millions of people joined Punk in mourning the saddening demise of the late star.
