By virtue of his prolonged career in WWE, John Cena has been a part of several iconic rivalries. While most of them stayed confined within the squared circle, some spilled over to real life. One such was with a 41-year-old former WWE superstar. Following his release, the wrestler launched a tirade against the WWE icon on social media.

Recently, he took another jibe at the 46-year-old by claiming to have the better attitude among the two.

Possessing an impressive physique and athleticism, Ryback was once considered to be the next big thing in WWE. This led to the former superstar getting more screen time and rubbing shoulders with big stars like Cena and CM Punk. However, after a few hits and misses, the promotion was quick to drop him down the card.

Cena and Ryback feuded for months inside the ring, with ‘The Champ’ going over. Though the exact reason for their enmity isn’t known, the former WWE Intercontinental Champion wasn’t a John Cena fan. Speaking to Konnan on his Keepin’ It 100 podcast, Ryback said, “I think I have a little better attitude, like coming from an athletic background.”

He spoke about John Cena’s interaction with him before leaving the WWE in 2016. Ryback, however, said that Cena’s ego was also justified.

“I do think you have to have a level of ego and protection to keep your spot for that amount of time and it’s the way it is,” he said. So, even though he took a swipe at Cena, it looks like the 41-year-old is slowly mellowing his stance toward the WWE legend.

However, the same cannot be said about his relationship with WWE.

Ryback fires another shot at WWE

Before he lost prominence, the 41-year-old was once paired with Paul Heyman. But even his status of being a ‘Heyman Guy’, couldn’t yield results and the alliance was called off after just two months. This remains a rare blemish in Heyman’s famed clientele.

That said, some fans could argue that the wrestler didn’t receive the push that other Heyman guys, the likes of Brock Lesnar, CM Punk, and Roman Reigns, received. Instead, he was used as a foil to act out the Punk-Heyman feud. This is, to an extent, not far from the truth. This might be a reason why Ryback continues to hold a grudge against the WWE.

However, this grudge, unlike the one he kept for Cena, wasn’t limited to just social media, it reached the courts. After he kept on using the name Ryback for wrestling in the independent circuit, WWE filed a case against him in 2020. Not willing to give up, as he had by then changed his legal name to Ryback, the wrestler mounted a legal challenge.

After three years, he announced in January 2023 that the promotion had relinquished the claim and he now solely owns the name. Meanwhile, in a recent tweet, he said he’s ready to tell the world “the exact story of what @wwe did and is continuing to do” to him since he walked out of the promotion.
