If there was an award for ‘The Best Dad In Hollywood’, that would definitely go to Dwayne Johnson. The Great One sure knows how to entertain his little angels.

And you would think that he picked up this fatherly instinct from his father Rocky Johnson. His hard upbringing forced him to limit his capacity for love according to Johnson.

Dwayne’s dad hit his mom’s boyfriend with a shovel when he was just 13

Young age and hot-headedness go hand in hand. Anything you say can just trigger them and bring out the worst in them. That’s exactly what happened on one Christmas night with the late Rocky Johnson.

On The Pivot Podcast, The Rock detailed how his dad was kicked out of the house at just 13. “It was Christmas, uh my dad’s dad had died, I think a year earlier, and there was a new boyfriend in the mix, he came over and they had their turkey and he peed on the turkey, the boyfriend did. He peed on the turkey. My dad was 13, they got in a fight, my dad took a toy guy and he drew a line in the dirt and he said ‘if you cross that, i’m gonna take the shovel and i’m gonna kill you!”

And you would think, what wrong could happen on the happiest day of the year. But Johnson added, “ My dad at 13 grabbed the shovel, laid him out cold, as a block of ice. Cops came, as he was out, the cops looked at my grandmother and said ‘when he gets up, one of the two things is gonna happen, either he’s gonna kill him or he’s gonna kill him. One of them gotta go’ and my grandmother looked at my dad and said ‘You’re out!’ at 13. So he’s on his own, so his capacity for love was very limited.”

But in spite of a rough childhood, his dad and he had a tight relationship in his younger days and that’s when he pushed him to come to the gym with him.

The Gym is always something special to The Rock because of his Father

Johnson has mentioned countless times how ‘The Gym’ is his spiritual anchor. He proudly talks about how he starts his day really early in his gym, which he calls ‘The Iron Paradise”. But his dad inculcated this habit of working out from a very young age.

The People’s Champ said, “So my point is that….the thing that always kept us together was him saying ‘come to the gym with me’. And so the gym was introduced in my life when I was a kid, a boy and it always meant something to me.
