It is often said that the accurate measure of success lies in one’s ability to bounce back from failure. Just a few weeks ago, reports emerged that the XFL had lost $60 million in its first under the new ownership. The defunct American minor football league was bought by Dwayne Johnson, his ex-wife and business partner Dany Garcia and RedBird Capital Partners in August 2020. Following the losses, the 51-year-old received criticism from many corners. Now, The Rock is on his way back up.
As per the latest developments surrounding the XFL, Johnson, and his team are leaving no stone unturned to recover the $60,000,000 loss.

The XFL was first floated at the start of the new millennium by pro wrestling impresario Vince McMahon. But the project didn’t gain much hype, and he managed to have only two seasons in two decades. Struggling with the finances, McMahon received help from his former employee, The Great One himself. Together, Johnson and his partners paid $23.5 million, including $8.5 million to settle a previous debt by the league, to acquire it.
The XFL had its first full season under the new ownership this year. Over 22,000 people attended the championship game at the Alamodome in San Antonio. The league operated smoothly before reports emerged of the losses and layoffs, which also brought in criticisms.
Recently, the board members took part in the XFL Combine and Johnson tweeted some “nice stats”. According to him, 31 XFL players have already signed with the NFL, while 116 players have worked out with NFL teams.

Apart from that, three XFL officials have also signed with the NFL. The People’s Champ said that the numbers will improve as the league adds more years under its belt.
This surely will calm the nerves of those who are worried about the minor football league. Even during the criticism, Johnson had remained unfazed. He also shared his approach towards the league earlier this year.
Johnson to follow his existing principle for XFL
Apart from the XFL, Dwayne Johnson also owns several other ventures. The wrestler-turned-actor is also a successful entrepreneur and understands how business works. The XFL co-owner will treat XFL the same way as he treats his other ventures, he said in a tweet last month.

Johnson believes in the long game and will allow his league time to blossom. He clearly isn’t worried about the losses as of now. Meanwhile, Johnson also received support from the top brass of a sports tech and data company, who, unlike many, hailed his league despite the $60 million losses.
Apart from that, an NFL player also showed interest in Dwayne Johnson’s league. Bobby Wagner, a middle linebacker for the Seattle Seahawks, expressed his interest in the league with a tweet in June. If the deal materializes, this could be a huge gain for the XFL. It might also lead to other NFL players, especially those nearing retirement, taking part in the minor league.
