It seems that everybody wants a piece of WWE legend and Hollywood Superstar Dwayne Johnson. After rumors of a possible WrestleMania match next year against Roman Reigns and Australian star Grayson Waller calling out The Rock on social media, another superstar has dragged The Rock’s name by calling him a “showman“.
Reigning Intercontinental Champion, Gunther was a guest on WrestlingNewsCo for an interview. Gunther discussed his record title reign, Survivor Series, and the possibility of fighting Roman Reigns. But one of the highlighting moments from the interview was his snarky remark on Dwayne Johnson.

During a rapid-fire segment, host Steve Fall asked Gunther about his opinion on some of the previous Intercontinental Champions. The names mentioned were Razor Ramon, Mr. Perfect, Jeff Jarrett, and The Rock. Gunther heaped praises on all of them but with a pinch of salt for Hollywood superstar, Dwayne Johnson.
While praising The People’s Champion, Gunther said, “I think it’s he’s the new Hulk Hogan, I think, in terms of if you ask random people on the street in some random country, they will say The Rock and connect it with wrestling and most famous, but I categorize him as a showman as well.”
The analogy made was a reference to The Rock’s ascension as a household name among non-wrestling or casual fans. Dwayne Johnson has achieved that popularity as a Hollywood superstar, thus making non-wrestling fans relate to wrestling through him. Hulk Hogan achieved a similar status during the Golden Age of wrestling in the 1980s.
Though Gunther praised The Rock for his stardom, he also took a sly dig at him for being more of a showman than a wrestler. The record-breaking Intercontinental Champion had similar remarks for The Ultimate Warrior.

After these comments, he has now gone after The Rock, despite praising him as the Hulk Hogan of this era.
