Several pro wrestlers lose themselves in their characters. This helps fans to associate with the wrestler better while also liking them more. However, wrestlers also lose character fluidity due to this association. This is because after fans see a wrestler as a heel or a babyface for a long time, it becomes risky to switch them to either side. We can see John Cena as an example when such a topic comes up.

Paul Heyman recently appeared on the podcast, ‘Tetragrammaton by Rick Rubin’. There, the popular WWE manager talked about how he could have been paired with Cena in the promotion. However, Cena’s ‘face’ character prevented this situation from coming true.

In the podcast episode, The Wise Man recalled how one day Vince McMahon approached him regarding his desire to put him back on screen. But first, McMahon wanted to pair Heyman with a wrestler. Even though all of Heyman’s prefered wrestlers were unavailable, he believed McMahon would never pair him with Roman Reigns.

This meant a heel turn for Reigns something Heyman believed McMahon would never do with Cena. Heyman believed “he would never have allowed Cena [to come to the dark side].

After this statement, Paul Heyman subtly started comparing John Cena with a character from the $51.8 Billion movie franchise, ‘Star Wars’. The manager reveals what was McMahon’s plan all along while referencing a critical point in the movie franchise. “Cena was going to be Anakin Skywalker the entire time. He was never going to be Darth Vader,” said the manager.

In fact, it’s not just Paul Heyman who has talked about Cena’s role as a face. Several WWE personalities have shared insight on this topic. However, Eric Bischoff once looked back on the impact Cena could’ve made if he had turned heel.

Bischoff imagined a reality where McMahon decided to turn Cena’s heel. He compared the situation to Hulk Hogan‘s heel turn because it had a significant impact on the audience. This was because a lot of the audience was connected to his character as a face. So, when he turned  heel, several people, including adults, cried that night. Bischoff believes Cena had a similar impact on his generation of viewers.
