

Bob Backlund is a legendary figure in pro wrestling. Fans remember Backlund for his time in WWE. Other than WWE, Backlund has also performed in other promotions, including NJPW. Although Backlund left WWE in 1997, only a few will remember his last attempt to revive his career in the company back in 2000.
One of those few individuals was Kurt Angle. The American Hero was considered one of the best wrestlers of all time by his fans. After winning a Gold Medal in Olympics for his country in freestyle wrestling, Angle joined WWE in 1999. For a while, King Kurt also worked with Bob Backlund, where he was being managed by the legend.

In his latest episode of the podcast Kurt Angle Show, the Olympian shared a hilarious incident. Angle opened up about that time when Bob Backlund was trying to make his comeback in WWE. According to Angle, Backlund’s plan of staying in WWE failed when he forgot the show was live.
On a 20th, March 2000 segment of Monday Night Raw, Backlund and Kurt Angle were shooting a live segment with Chris Benoit. Backlund was supposed to hit Benoit in the face, but instead, he asked for a retake.

Kurt Angle explained the whole situation while laughing at the irony of Backlund.

“[Bob] was supposed to put the crippler crossface on [Chris Benoit] while he was sitting, and Bob didn’t want to do it because he wasn’t standing up.” But in Bob Backlund’s defense, he maybe was not used to the live recordings as he used to perform in a different era of WWE. Angle also told the story in good humor and said, “Don’t get me wrong, Bob was fun to work with. I loved him.”

According to Angle, that was the last call made by the officials of WWE to remove Bob Backlund from the roster.
