Despite Suffering the Biggest Loss of His Life, Cody Rhodes Points Out the Way He Benefitted From Dusty Rhodes’ Death – “I Had a Suit”

Cody Rhodes‘ plans were not always sorted. The American Nightmare went through a confusing phase in his life before he found himself. The time, particularly after his father’s demise, was a bit more testing for him. Not only did the wrestler have to figure out things about himself, but he also wanted to find a way to take care of his family.

All of this, combined with his personal grief, might have been overwhelming for the wrestler. He used these things to process the situation and delay his task of ‘becoming Cody Rhodes’. He explained this phase of his life further in his documentary while also sharing what helped him.

Cody Rhodes’ was hardened in his tough times

The documentary about Cody Rhodes ‘American Nightmare: Becoming Cody Rhodes’ was released on 31st July 2023 on the streaming platform Peacock. The documentary quickly gained recognition as it focused on Cody Rhodes’ journey to become a well-known wrestler in the business. In one of the scenes, he even talked about how after his father Dusty Rhodes‘ demise, everybody expected him to become ‘Cody Rhodes’. However, he was far from ready.

“I wasn’t even close to being ready to be Cody Rhodes. So, now, I had a mask already that I could dive right into. I had a suit that could become an armor while I grieved, while I processed, and while I figured out how do I move the family forward now,” said Rhodes in the documentary.

The American Nightmare claimed how his father’s demise allowed him to process who he was and how to move forward. In the meantime, the wrestler was able to focus on issues that required his attention as a first priority.

Following the documentary release, Rhodes was featured in a number of interviews. In one of them, he detailed a bit more on what exactly started his journey to become the star that he is today.

Cody Rhodes points out a key moment in his life

Rhodes recently sat down to chat with ‘Sports Illustrated’. In a video posted on their official YouTube channel, Rhodes talked about how his life was not ideal during his run as Stardust. While his wife was announcing prestigious names as a rig announcer, he found his gimmick to be stupid. All of this led him to a dark pit of negative thoughts and he eventually got himself caught in a drinking problem.

What got him out, however, were some key moments from his wrestling career. One of them he mentioned was an MITB from 2013. There, despite wrestling alongside a good amount of heroic wrestlers, the crowd chanted Cody’s name due to his performance.

Moments like these, combined with other factors, led ‘Stardust’ to finally become ‘Cody Rhodes’. Even to this day, it appears that the 38-year-old feels grateful that he took his time with things to first process the situation before embarking on his quest to become a superstar.
