Vince McMahon is the lifeblood of the WWE. The Chairman has dedicated his life to making the WWE the largest professional wrestling company in the world. Since he purchased the company from his father in 1982, he has given more than blood, sweat, and tears to the industry. He’s even sustained multiple injuries while doing so, some of which persist.

Recently, he underwent surgery at the age of 77. Speculations began on whether it was related to an injury he suffered 29 years ago. However, we finally learned the truth.

McMahon loves bodybuilding; any hardcore WWE fan can tell you that. McMahon has been building his body since he was a young man who acquired the WWE. There is a myth that his love for having a well-rounded physique is why he only pushes the stars with the best physiques in the WWE to the top. The best way to get the Greek God physique is to do heavy lifting. Unfortunately, it did not work well for McMahon.

In the recent Wrestling Observer Newsletter by Dave Meltzer, the topic of McMahon’s surgery was noted. It confirmed that the surgery was for his back and not his neck. In 1994, he had surgery on his back. This surgery was due to his heavy lifting.

McMahon is known to love heavy squats. His doctors advised him to leave this as it takes a massive toll on the hips and back. Unfortunately, McMahon continued to do it even after a point most would stop.

Squats are the best for building muscle, but the pressure they put on the hips and back cannot be reversed after a certain age. McMahon has had a history of hip issues.

While doctors did advise McMahon to get a hip replacement done back in the day, he willingly chose not to as it would mean he would have to stop heavy squats. McMahon’s love for bodybuilding has taken a toll on his body, reflected in his old age.

One of the in-ring incidents of the injuries McMahon sustained while in the WWE is the 2005 Royal Rumble. This incident is a legend of how McMahon injured himself in the ring. In one of the most perfect botches in WWE history, John Cena eliminated Batista and himself during the end of the 2005 Battle Royal. However, Cena was the only one that should have been eliminated, as Batista was supposed to be the winner. Chaos ensued while the referees tried to figure out what to do while both men claimed victory.

In typical McMahon fashion, Big Vince walked out to the ring, ripping his jacket off, furious at everyone. However, this level of adrenaline proved to be the worst possible timing. As he slid into the ring to confront everyone, he hit both knees on the ring apron. This resulted in the most unique and rare in-ring injuries. McMahon tore both of his quadriceps muscles simultaneously and could not move.

Needless to say, everyone in the ring was confused as to what had happened while McMahon awkwardly sat there barking orders. He had to be carried out of the ring by the referees. In retrospect, this is one of the most iconic unplanned endings to a Royal Rumble match.
