On the August 7 edition of SmackDown 2003, Brock Lesnar took on Vince McMahon in a Steel Cage match. Kurt Angle was the special guest referee for the bout. ‘The Beast Incarnate’ had set foot inside to destroy McMahon, but mauled Angle instead.
Lesnar and Angle were involved in a friendly rivalry for the WWE Championship during the time. McMahon threw himself into the mix and created a misunderstanding between the two stars. This led to Lesnar targeting Angle – who was recovering from his neck surgery – during his steel cage match with ‘The Evil Genius.’
Inside the steel cage, Lesnar went all crazy on ‘The Olympic Hero’. Angle took several bumps to his neck, but a simple maneuver by Lesnar during the ending segment of the blue brand caused him the most pain.

The one time that Brock Lesnar made Kurt Angle squirm in pain
During The Kurt Angle Show titled #124: SummerSlam 2003, Angle revealed how one simple move from ‘The Conqueror’ made him writhe in pain in 2003. He said, “The only thing I told him that he didn’t do right, and this is really small. He put his foot on my face at the end, on my chin, and turned my head sideways.”
“That really affected my neck more than all those bumps did. I was like Brock don’t put your foot on my chin, turn my head and lean all your weight on me. That was hurting my neck worse more than anything else, so it was just something really small,” he added.
The ending moments of the steel cage match the segment between Lesnar and ‘Vinnie Mac’ saw Lesnar putting his leg on top of Angle’s face while holding the WWE Championship in his hand. Despite taking several other bumps inside the ring, that particular small move caused Angle the most pain.
The entire segment was brutal to watch as Lesnar mercilessly threw Angle around the ring. But how exactly did the feud begin and play out?

Following his neck surgery in August 2003, ‘King Kurt’ developed a more amicable rivalry with Lesnar, as both were friends and vying for the championship title. In a triple threat match featuring Big Show, Angle managed to defeat Lesnar and win the WWE Championship.

Lesnar didn’t let his friendship with Angle stop him from aggressively pursuing the WWE Championship. When ‘Mr. McMahon got involved in the rivalry, things got worse. He used his dirty tactics and brainwashed Lesnar. That is why we saw Lesnar turning on his friendly rival, Angle on August 7, 2003, SmackDown.
‘The Beast’ threw Angle around the ring and bashed him into the steel cage walls multiple times. He used the dangerous techniques from his wrestling arsenal to inflict severe pain on him, while McMahon laughed. In the end, McMahon and Lesnar stood tall over Angle’s almost-dead body as they had their last laugh.
