There’s no doubt that WWE has been the sports entertainment giant for a long time now. But all of this didn’t come easy to the company. Over the years, they have tried using several techniques to enhance their viewership and reach where they are now. The former commentator, Jim Ross, recently shared one such method of WWE.

It’s evident that to make a business work, there should be advancements to it, in order to scale it up. And thus, WWE has changed a lot of things when it comes to the presentation of their superstars. Be it the approach toward their storyline or the cutting of promos. With time, things have evolved for good. One such change was when the promotion shifted to open Monday Night RAW with promos of top stars instead of matches as they did before.

Jim Ross stated one shift in WWE’s method was the reason behind its success

Speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, the Hall of Fame legend spoke his mind on the matter of how things shifted in WWE. Earlier, Raw started right from the matches, heating up the atmosphere. However, right now, that’s not the case anymore. Nowadays, the promos of top stars or top storylines are shown first to sell the story. It appears like this formula was successful and thus the company is abiding by it.

Ross said, “I think it was about during this era, that we started off these shows with promo. A scene setter. Yes, it’s all it was. It’s a scene setter to tease the audience on what was still to come.

Coming from a well-experienced person who has worked with WWE for a long time makes it all the more credible. And with the 71-year-old legend’s reasoning, it appears correct, as the scene setter primarily works as a tease for what is to come. However, this wasn’t the first time that JR put his distant opinion forward.

That being said, we cannot forget some instances where it’s evident that this overused formula of WWE didn’t work.

Classic examples of fans booing the overused formula of WWE

One of the prime examples of WWE’s cutting of promo with their top star that received a massive backlash from the crowd would be of RAW after WrestleMania 33. There Roman Reigns came to cut the promo of a lifetime after defeating The Undertaker at The Show of the Shows. But little did he know that he had to receive a straight 10 minutes of booing from the crowd.

Similar to this, The Deadman’s popularity took a toll on Brock Lesnar as well. After winning at WrestleMania 30 against The Phenom, Lesnar was immensely booed by the New Orleans crowd on Raw after Mania.

Even though it comes out as boring and overused, JR believes this idea of cutting promos to be the reason behind WWE’s success.
