Johnson took the pro-wrestling world by storm shortly after making his debut in WWE in 1996. Despite being a third-generation superstar in the promotion, Johnson’s childhood wasn’t a smooth passage. His family, comprising father and WWE Hall of Famer Rocky Johnson and mother Ata Johnson, faced several hardships.

The 51-year-old also faced dejection from football before turning to pro wrestling. It’s safe to say that Johnson has had his share of experiences. Today, he’s worth a whopping $800 million, but at one point, he had just $7 left in the bank. Speaking to Winfrey, Johnson shared the importance of his stories.

“It’s important that we share those stories. Share the stories about being evicted. Her mom’s parents were immigrants who came over from Cuba,” The Rock said about his interaction with elder daughter Simone, who now performs in NXT as Ava Raine.

But not just the 21-year-old, Johnson also imparts lessons to his other two daughters- Jasmine and Tiana- as well. “…We continue to instill in the babies and the kids the value of a dollar and what it means and the value of food and always saying how grateful we are and the things we are grateful for, especially at that young age,” he said.

Johnson clearly remembers where he came from and the battles that he had to endure to reach and wants others to never forget the past. During a recent chat, he recalled his past and how it helped him reach where he was now.

Johnson didn’t want to clean houses

As mentioned above, the Johnson family hit quite a few bumps during The People’s Champ’s teenage growing years. Wrestling wasn’t as high paying as it is now, and Rocky Johnson clearly didn’t make enough to clear all his bills. Eventually, the family was sent an eviction notice, which forced Dwayne Johnson’s parents to open a cleaning business.

“He [Rocky Johnson] opened up a cleaning company and they were just like cleaning houses, cleaning anything they could,” Johnson shared during his appearance on The Pivot podcast. Seeing his parents swat it out, it convinced a young Johnson that he couldn’t be broke and refused to clean for a living.

All these years later, Johnson’s determination has not only prevented him from that job, but it has also made him a global face. And like a lot of stories, this one had a few happy endings. The wrestler-turned-actor was later able to buy his father and mother their houses.
