Vince McMahon hit the headlines earlier this year, after he made a comeback to the WWE, following a forced break last year. In 2022, McMahon was forced to quit his own promotion as reports emerged about his transgressions. After staying away from it for over half a year, McMahon came back with a bang as WWE signed a record deal with UFC’s parent company, Endeavor, for a WWE-UFC merger. The pro wrestling impresario has made the news again, this time due to his failing health.

Just a few days ago, reports emerged that McMahon had gone under the knife. WWE has now provided an update about the 77-year-old’s health.

The billionaire businessman has always been present for marquee events. He was backstage at WrestleMania 39 this year in Hollywood. However, it looks unlikely for McMahon to attend WWE SummerSlam this weekend. The premium live event (PLE) is scheduled for August 5. The event will emanate from Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.

As per a SEC filing from the company, McMahon will remain on leave until further notice. “Mr. McMahon will remain on medical leave until further notice,” the company statement read. However, they reiterated that he will “remain Executive Chairman of the Company”.

This development follows another worrying news about McMahon. The company notified that the septuagenarian was hit with a search warrant and federal grand jury subpoena. McMahon received it just days before his surgery, which took place on July 21.

Vince McMahon’s return left many wrestlers on wait and see mode

While there’s no doubt about McMahon’s eye for talent and his business acumen, the same cannot be said about his booking style. While it worked wonders for the promotion in the 90s and early 2000s, WWE’s current run clashes with McMahon’s style. He is known for abrupt changes to content, leaving talents and backstage crew frustrated on many occasions. Not surprisingly, with McMahon gone and his son-in-law and WWE legend Triple H in charge, the roster was happy. It is also reflected in the storylines, as they received a longer run.

According to reports, after McMahon’s comeback in 2023, several wrestlers were on alert and took a wait-and-see approach. A  WrestleTalk report stated that some wrestlers also contemplated quitting the company after they learned about the development.

While this wouldn’t have been a big headache for the WWE, due to lack of competition in the past, the arrival of AEW has leveled the playing field. Several wrestlers have jumped ship to the rival promotion in the recent past. So, the company will have to stay a step ahead to safeguard its roster.
