One of the most iconic things that Cody Rhodes got to bring to WWE from AEW was his theme song, Kingdom. Performed by the band Downstait, the song became a fan-favorite quickly, with the audience going viral on the ‘WHOA’ part. While the band was involved in mostly all the creatives behind the product, The American Nightmare also had some input.
The basic theme of the song would not have suited Cody Rhodes so well if he hadn’t been vocal about how he wanted his theme song to be. For this, the band gives him full credit.

The music was written by the band Downstait for Cody Rhodes, who had left WWE and was going to start another journey in the world of wrestling. Inspired by his life events, the former AEW EVP wanted the band to write a song that resonated with him. This song ended up being Kingdom.
Recently on ‘X’, a fan asked whether Cody Rhodes gave Downstait any words or phrases to inspire the song. To this, the band replied, “He said he liked the message of BMTH’s Throne (f___ you then, watch me shine), and wanted lyrics that reflected his relationship with Dusty. While many interpret ‘You took my dreams, but not my name’ as a shot at WWE, it also represents life taking Dusty, but not Cody’s identity.”

According to the band, Rhodes wanted the lyrics to represent his real-life events. Even though life has taken Dusty Rhodes away from him, it cannot steal his identity.
This then went on to become the foundation of Cody Rhodes’ struggle in WWE. He had to prove himself to the roster and the fans alike that he is more than his father’s son.
But this is not the only way that Cody Rhodes influenced his current theme song.

Origin of Cody Rhodes’ theme song
Last year, Downstait confirmed that even though they wrote the song themselves, they were inspired by another song. Like the idea that Cody Rhodes gave, this one also came from his past. Through a tweet, the American band revealed that Rhodes’ theme song in his previous WWE run, Smoke and Mirrors by Jim Johnston, helped them come up with their latest product.
The popular WHOA part in Cody Rhodes’ song existed from his theme in the previous WWE run.
