Cody Rhodes retained the WWE Undisputed Universal title for the first at a PLE in Lyon, France. The crowd at Backlash 2024 was one of the best parts of the show. The audience seemed to enjoy the main event more than anything. However, even before the match began, The American Nightmare was welcomed into the stadium with open arms.

During his entrance, Cody Rhodes’ theme song, unfortunately, stopped in the middle. However, this didn’t botch the reigning champion’s entry in any way. This is because the crowd picked off the song where it had cut off, making up for an amazing moment. When somebody shared the mesmerizing clip on ‘X’, a fan commented, “#FinishTheSong“.

This was a reference to the tagline that WWE used to market Cody Rhodes’ match against his archenemy, rallying the fanbase to support him to ‘finish his story’. When the former AEW EVP came across this fan’s comment, he was impressed by the direction he gave to the Lyon crowd. As a result, Rhodes replied, “Love that!”

All of it happened while AJ Styles had to stand in the squared circle and watch the crowd support his rival. Although the crowd cheered plenty for ‘The Phenomenal’ as well, the support for Rhodes was something special altogether.

His successful title retention caused Cody Rhodes to accept his position as the company’s ‘Quarterback’ as he announced on ‘X’. However, there are industry insiders who believe that it is better for The American Nightmare to lose his title already.

Industry insiders already tip Cody Rhodes to vacate his title

Gunther‘s 666-day IC Championship reign came to an end at WrestleMania XL. Fans believed that WWE was preparing him to move to a bigger title. While The Ring General isn’t yet feuding with a reigning champion, Fightful believes that it would be good to make him win the WWE Undisputed Championship.

The ex-AEW EVP has only held the title for around a month and fans had already started criticizing his career run. A hint foreshadowing a future feud was Cody Rhodes talking about how he could face The Ring General as he felt the chemistry between them when they had a brief face-off at Royal Rumble 2023.

Although they didn’t have the chance to have a title bout since then, Cody Rhodes may be on the target now that Gunther could be looking for a bigger championship to conquer.
