Ever since his return to WWE in WrestleMania 38, Cody Rhodes has been positioned as a main eventer. He has been involved in storylines with top performers of the company, such as Seth Rollins, Roman Reigns, and Brock Lesnar.
Rhodes has had a match at all the PLEs for WWE since WrestleMania this year. But despite him being announced for the next PLE Payback, his impressive streak might come to an end.

WWE Payback 2023 is a week away and the match card for the September 2 PLE is still being updated. On this week’s SmackDown, it was revealed that US Champion Rey Mysterio will defend his title against Austin Theory. Along with Mysterio, Cody Rhodes was also added to the cards, but without a match. It will mark the end of his impressive five-month streak of competing at every major WWE PLE.
The American Nightmare will be a special guest at The Grayson Waller Effect Show. The announcement was made in the first hour of SmackDown when Cody Rhodes came to the ring to pay tribute to the late Bray Wyatt. It was mentioned that Rhodes will comment upon his unfinished story after his WrestleMania 39 loss against Roman Reigns. Hence, he will be present at The Grayson Waller Effect.
Grayson Waller has been making big strides since his main roster debut. At NXT, he got a major push after feuding against AJ Styles. In the main roster, he has already shared the ring with the likes of Edge and John Cena. Rhodes will help elevate Waller’s stake among the fans.
Rhodes on the other hand will see the end of his five-month PLE match streak. He wrestled Roman Reigns at WrestleMania for the Undisputed Universal Championship in April. In May he competed twice against Brock Lesnar at Backlash and Night of Champions.
In July he went up against Dominik Mysterio at Money in The Bank in London before beating Lesnar in the rubber match at SummerSlam earlier this month. With Payback being a break for him, it remains to be seen what is next for ‘The American Nightmare’.

It is not clear as of now if there will be a match between Rhodes and Waller, but it might lead to a possible storyline between the two superstars. As of now, both of them are without any major storylines, especially Rhodes who has just finished his feud against Lesnar.
Rhodes is still one of the top baby faces in the WWE but at the moment he has no major storyline to work with. WWE has not dropped a single hint yet about his near future but rumors are that he will face Roman Reigns again at WrestleMania 40.
