Cody Rhodes‘ journey to become the Undisputed Universal WWE Champion has not been a bed of roses. From closely missing his first chance during WrestleMania 39 to facing a lot of trouble from a returning Dwyane Johnson with confidence, The American Nightmare went beyond the challenges presented in his path. Maybe it became possible as the 38-year-old somehow saw through the hardships ahead as early as his momentous Royal Rumble victory night.

An old promo of him throwing shades at The Great One heavily backed up Rhodes’ claim of previewing his potential replacement in the dream title match against Roman Reigns at Mania 40.

A restricting juncture in Rhodes’ career came off right after The Rock loomed large in the WrestleMania trajectory of WWE. Eventually, the idea of a potential Rock vs Roman Reigns started to take over the rumor mills, leaving Rhodes’ future in severe jeopardy. While the unbridled pro-Cody Rhodes sentiment ultimately forced the company to go back to the previous plan whatsoever, Rhodes had his share of mental upheavals, knowing about it in the first place.

Recently, in the WrestleMania documentary, the former AEW star noted he got to know about The Rock vs Roman Reigns’ plan much earlier than we even could imagine. When Rhodes secured his ticket to Philadelphia in a stellar Royal Rumble win, he couldn’t be on cloud nine as he by the time knew about the nixed WrestleMania plan. The star kept it close to his chest, as it didn’t suit the mood of the day. Whining despite winning would have affected his image negatively.

We are forced to believe it after a Raw after Rumble promo work emerged on the internet, proving the legitimacy of the statement.

The promo showed American Nightmare thanking fans emotionally for being with him during the Rumble night while taking a slight jibe at the Final Boss.

While the entire promo looked like just another regular segment back then, now it made complete sense with us being aware of the background.

Cody Rhodes, however, continues to be the humble champion despite getting over every single hurdle to sit atop the business today.

Cody Rhodes seems proud of what he achieved so far

The American Nightmare received a lackluster reception from fans as a champion so far. People continue to take shots at his boring promo work, limiting deliveries and the ability to prove himself a better champion than the Tribal Chief. Instead of taking these brickbats to heart, Rhodes chose to be focused on the quality and continued shutting his critics down through consecutive successful title defenses. During a recent episode of Busted Open Radio, the 38-year-old noted he’s proud of the fact that he defeated Reigns at the peak of his career and expects to reach his legacy halfway at least.
