Will CM Punk's return to WWE reignite his career, or is it just a safer bet?

CM Punk revealed on Monday Night Raw a week ago, that he has been medically cleared to face off at SummerSlam. Fans will be seeing him in the ring for the first time since Royal Rumble 2024 because of the tricep injury he endured. The WWE legend will be back in action again, but he may not go all in.

According to Dave Meltzer, CM Punk will have the liberty to hold back his wrestling skills and prowess because he has left the AEW roster. The industry insider thinks that the wrestler may be able to cut some slack during his SummerSlam match.

During the Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer was talking to his co-host and opined that the wrestlers on the AEW wrestler tend to work their “a** off” and it’s not the same culture in WWE. Since “The Best in the World” is now a part of the leading wrestling promotion again, he may ease his match through. “I suspect that the work that he did in AEW will be different in WWE. I think he will do a safer style in WWE. No matter what anyone says, the standard in WWE is lower and people hate to hear that, but it is. So you don’t have to do as much,” said Meltzer.

SummerSlam will showcase whether CM Punk proves Dave Meltzer wrong or right. The latter thinks that the AEW roster tends to wrestle harder than that of WWE. According to him, this is because everybody around them is putting in just as much effort. However, this wasn’t possible for Sting, allowing Tony Khan to get creative with him.

The wrestling legend retired earlier in 2024 after his final match in AEW. During his time on the roster, however, he wasn’t as present on TV as some of the other stars. The primary reason behind this could be the fact that he was already old enough. So, if he had wrestled just as much as the younger stars, fans would’ve realized that this was not working out for him, breaking the kayfabe. So, to tackle it, he wasn’t presented as many times on screen, and to add another layer of illusion, he was paired with a rising star, Darby Allin, who helped cover for him in the ring and take the primary load off him to work as a team.

A WWE legend praised Tony Khan and the rest of the creative team, whose idea was to use the 65-year-old in such a judicious way. With this decision, AEW maintained the work culture that Meltzer was talking about while also utilizing the talent of a legend. However, Dave’s opinion may be unpopular with many wrestling fans who think that WWE’s roster still goes out of its way to deliver good spots. Moreover, the Chicago-based wrestler may also challenge his views by going all in at the upcoming PLE.
