In his debut itself, Hayes accepted the current NXT Cruiserweight Champion, Kushida’s open challenge, but he lost. His second match was even more high profile, in which he confronted Adam Cole.

Hayes then took part in the 2021 NXT Breakout Tournament, which enabled the winner to a championship opportunity. He won the tournament by defeating Odyssey Jones.

A few weeks later, Carmelo cashed in on his opportunity against Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott and won the North American Championship.

Since his win, he has been a dominant heel, thrashing through NXT and his competitors. But it seems like he wants more than NXT superstars to challenge him for the title.

Shawn Michaels helped Carmelo to become successful.

As good as Carmelo Hayes is today, Romans did not build Rome in a day. He signed with WWE back in February 2021 and had been working on his gimmick for months before his debut.

Some influences who helped him become successful include The Heartbreak Kid, Shawn Michaels. In an interview with RNC Radio for  ‘The War Report’, Hayes talked about his relationship with Michaels.

He told the interviewers that Shawn told Carmelo that he would help him become successful, not liked by everyone.

Hayes said that the more experienced guys in NXT ‘take it to the head’ and that hurt him.

“But like I said in that first one man, I tell you, Shawn Michaels told me, he said, ‘I’m not here to help you be liked, I’m here to help you be successful and that’s coming from Shawn Michaels. I took that to heart.” Carmelo added. [H/T POST Wrestling]

“So that’s how I carry myself so, I say what I wanna say and I believe what I’m saying and I think that they believe what I’m saying too so it gets them a little bit pressed and at the end of the day, I don’t care. That’s how I’m gonna do my promos from this point on is just say what I feel.”

The North American champion revealed he stopped caring if people liked him. He started caring about being successful and he told himself he would.

Seth replied under his tweet, “I like your style, kid.” Carmelo acknowledged Rollins’ reply and retweeted his reply.

Hayes reminds fans of the Seth Rollins authority heel run in 2014-2015. He was vicious, conniving, and played dirty, just like Hayes is in NXT 2.0.
