WWE SmackDown: March 11th, 2022 featured WWE UK Superstar Pete Dunne, but with a massive name change – Butch. He is currently signed under WWE NXT.
The superstar appeared during Big E & Kofi Kingston vs Sheamus & Ridge Holland. Initially, he was ringside, but he did enter the ring after Sheamus pinned Kofi Kingston.
As soon as it was announced that WWE changed his name to Butch, the fans reacted. It seems as though no one was happy with the decision. Some believe the name ‘Pete Dunne’ was good enough, while others were of the opinion that a name change shouldn’t be this tragic.

With all the names WWE could possibly choose, the company selected Butch. There are not enough words to describe how disappointed the fans were.
I wouldn't care if they got rid off his first or 2nd name, but calling him Butch? Jesus christ that's like 100 times worse than Gunther

I’d walk into vinces office do a line of coke off it and refuse rehab if they said I was going to main roster and they were changing my name and this was the name they gave me

This is the second time WWE has changed the names of WWE UK Superstars to something bizarre. Previously, Piper Niven was called up from NXT UK to WWE Raw, and the company changed her name to Doudrop.

Butch has worked dark matches prior to his WWE SmackDown debut
This was the first time the former Pete Dunne made an appearance on SmackDown Television. Clearly, he’s made his SmackDown debut, and will most likely work with Sheamus, considering Michael Cole referred to him as Sheamus’ protégé.
However, this isn’t the first the SmackDown audience actually saw him. The live audience witnessed him in action in dark matches on January 7th and February 4th. In both of those matches, he went up against Tommaso Ciampa in a losing effort.
It’s possible WWE had been planning his call-up for a while as he hasn’t been on WWE NXT 2.0 television since he lost to Carmelo Hayes on March 1st, 2022.

It’s unknown exactly how WWE plans on moving forward with Butch. However, the Superstar does have the potential to become a big name on the main roster. But that won’t come immediately. It’ll be a while before Butch gets an opportunity that will see him move towards the top.

If he keeps working with Sheamus, WWE could team him up with Sheamus for a tag team as well.
