For the first time since WWE SummerSlam 2020, Sonya Deville has returned to WWE SmackDown. She was seen walking backstage as a slew of WWE Superstars stared at her in disbelief.

Deville left the WWE after suffering a crushing defeat to her former best friend Mandy Rose. Corey Graves noted that the Superstar has been reinstated to WWE once again.

With the Royal Rumble coming up in less than three weeks, WWE would be sensible to get some big names back into the picture. This makes Deville one of the favourites to win the Rumble match. Deville is a great wrestler and seeing her challenge either Asuka or Sasha Banks would be a match for the ages.

Sonya’s last feud before leaving WWE was against Mandy Rose. Fire and Desire broke up after Rose started to get more attention than Deville.

This was majorly because of the whole Otis WrestleMania angle which led to Deville sabotaging Mandy’s date with Otis. Deville turned on Mandy long after WrestleMania, and a match was set at SummerSlam.

At SummerSlam, Rose and Deville met in a vicious No Disqualification match. The stipulation fit the storyline as Deville took some drastic steps to ensure Mandy was out of the spotlight.

Deville cut Mandy’s hair to drive home the hatred that had developed. Along with the No DQ stipulation, the loser of the match would have to leave WWE. This was a clever way to write off Deville till her shocking return tonight.

For a roster already brimming with talent, Sonya Deville’s return adds more value to the SmackDown women’s division. With faces as popular as Sasha Banks, and heels as hated as Bayley, the division is the most impressive in WWE. Deville could not only add to the value but also be an indirect motivator to the rest of the division.

Sonya’s return means WWE will capitalise on the buzz and push her to the moon. This is classic WWE booking, and it is one that often works.

Had Deville returned on WWE Raw, it would have been a totally different scenario. The Raw division needs more talent as they are overly dependent on Charlotte, Asuka, Nia Jax and Shayna Baszler.
