Otis' near neck injury—Is WWE doing enough to protect its stars?

Following the breakup of Alpha Academy, the Wyatt Sicks targeted Chad Gable. To get protection from the stable led by Uncle Howdy, the Raw star decided to join forces with the Creed Brothers. Despite the request to form a larger Alpha Academy, Otis was not convinced by his former teacher and did not forgive him for all the torment Gable put him and his friends through. However, due to the refusal, Julius and Brutus assaulted Akira Tozawa and Otis seven days ago. WWE management then decreed a match between the two teams for the latest edition of Monday Night RAW.

It was a Texas tornado match that saw the Creed brothers clinching the win because of the heel turn made by Ivy Nile as she attacked Maxxine Dupri to distract Otis and Tozawa. A move that surely no one saw coming. However, there was another spot in the match that surely no one saw coming. It was a back-drop for Otis as Julius Creed picked him up on his shoulders. However, the move also became a superplex as Otis picked up Brutus Creed, who was on the top rope right in front of him.

This move surely made the crowd get on their feet. However, it could’ve also been the move that might’ve sidelined Otis for long or even ended his career. He landed on his neck due to the superplex landing before the back-drop. On the Busted Open Podcast, pro wrestling legend Tommy Dreamer explained how devastating the move was and how WWE’s continuous botch fest could’ve ended in tragedy.

He said, “So with that specific spot, you are so dependent on the person who is power bombing you. However, this was one of the Creed Brothers. Hooks Otis underneath. Suplex. He that is the the biggest timing you ever need. Here’s how it kind of went awry because you’re not going for a powerbomb. He was on his shoulders to hold him and he went back. Otis started to go before the Creed Brother went and could have broke Otis’s neck. He fell awkwardly. Thankfully, he did not get hurt.”

He further added, “The timing, you know, the timing of that. It’s the base that has to go first, not the superplex. It’s harder to do when you’re on somebody’s shoulders. Not in the powerbomb position because the power bomber is really just following through with goes on that movement. That’s when the guy is doing the suplex. You just follow and guide that move. But if you’re on somebody’s shoulders, you really have to go first and literally almost superplex your own partner because you’re… you have the guy sitting on your shoulders. So. Otis started to go. But the one Creed Brothers stayed up top and it’s a second off. But that second we almost I mean, thankfully Otis has such a strong neck. He landed awkwardly.”
