When two electrifying superstars butt heads, fans expect an all-time classic. Most of the time, reality falls on the same page. But not all the time the generic norm applies. The SummerSlam encounter of the two heavyweights in the wrestling community cemented the stance back in the summer of 2005.

Hulk Hogan and Shawn Michaels both were at the helm of the business during their respective peaks. The phenomenal duo first met each other on the stage of SummerSlam 2005, but to everyone’s surprise, the match went hilariously wrong. Going down memory lane, Kurt Angle has his say on the age-old controversial match.

WWE Universe was waiting with bated breath to see two generational superstars poising at two different ends in the ring. But when finally it materialized, the highly hyped-up dream match turned into a mere joke because of certain issues getting in the way. It was Michales who showed colossal liberty against Hulk Hogan. He oversold almost every punch and move that made the entire match ridiculous to the fans. It also didn’t sit well with the Hulkster, who got his revenge on point by standing tall at the end. But Kurt Angle was the exception. He found Michales’s way of overselling pretty cool.

Recollecting the disappointing showdown, the 54-year-old Hall of Famer noted, ”Shawn sold like incredibly well and maybe oversold but I liked it I liked it I think Shawn, he tried to make a mockery out of Hogan at certain points in the match where he was overselling and you know when he took the boot from Hulk Hogan and got back up on his feet and then you know did a spin in the air and then fell back down yeah a lot of Comedy but you know what with Shawn it works.”

”I don’t know why because I know man we’re just we buy it hook line and sinker out of him he’s yeah, all that stuff and show off and everything but it all looks good man.”, the Olympic gold medalist justified his out of the box stance.

But what was the underlying reason behind Shwan Michaels almost ruining a sure shot classic match?

Hulk Hogan disagreed to fight a face vs face bout with Shawn Michaels just in time

HBK’s primary idea was to have three matches against Hulkmania that would eventually culminate into a cage match. Hogan gave his node to this pitch as well. It was meant to be a gentleman’s fight until Michales cut a seething promo after their first SummerSlam encounter. Hogan, right away, dismissed the idea of fighting him as a face. He wanted a heel turn for Michaels.

HBK did it without even putting much effort. His over-the-top gestures throughout the whole match came out naturally, as he was really fuming with rage against Hogan for changing the plan at the last minute.

However, despite their first and last controversial encounter, Hogan and Michaels will remain two irreplaceable gems of the company, regardless.
