It all started when Black Adam came out to the public. The movie did well for a superhero movie that showcased an origin movie. However, that wasn’t the expected box office numbers. WB needed a big hit with this Johnson-led superhero movie, but they didn’t get one. This led the company to change the direction of the entire DCEU and get industry experts as heads of creatives.

WB chose James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new head honchos and the two conceptualized a unique vision for the franchise in the future. While Johnson had fought hard to bring back Henry Cavill as Superman for Black Adam, it didn’t work. Some fans were excited about it, but most didn’t care about the direction the franchise was headed in. Gunn and Safran decided to fire Cavill and start their new DCEU instead of following Johnson’s idea. This finally led Johnson to leave the series as well.
