Apollo Crews' scary bump—Is WWE doing enough to protect its wrestlers from serious injuries?

Tonight’s edition of Friday Night SmackDown was truly an action-packed one that featured a gauntlet match to decide the next challengers for the SmackDown tag team championships. At the end of the show, fans got their answer, as DIY (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) will now put the WWE Tag Team Championships on the line against The Bloodline (Jacob Fatu and Tama Tonga). Fatu and Tama got their chance after they defeated the Street Profits in the final round of the gauntlet. With this triumph, the faction is just one step away from regaining the tag team gold that the Usos lost at WrestleMania 39.

However, the gauntlet match also featured a team made up of lost superstars. One that stole the show for all the wrong reasons. Baron Corbin is back on the main roster after a long stint in NXT. However, he was not well received by Santos Escobar, who mocked him while he was being interviewed. Corbin wanted to settle the matter in the ring but was treacherously attacked by Angel Garza and Humberto Carrillo.

Apollo Crews, who already had a rivalry with Ghost’s Legacy, came to the rescue. As a result of this, the two were made into a tag team that competed in the gauntlet. While they won their first match and got eliminated in the second, what truly became the highlight of their run was a botch that could’ve turned deadly for Crews. During his match against the Street Profits, he took a suplex and landed on his neck.

This truly could’ve been a disaster, as we have seen how several superstars had their careers cut short due to neck injuries, such as Stone Cold Steve Austin, and the latest example being Big E, who survived the chances of being paralyzed by the injury. Tyson Kidd also endured a similar experience, as he too could’ve been left paralyzed after his match against Samoa Joe. The WWE Universe surely knows how dangerous neck injuries can be, so as soon as they watched the moment happen live, they took to Twitter to share their reactions.

Fans show their concern for the WWE Superstar

This truly was a scary spot. One that left many fans shocked as Apollo Crews still managed to get up and continue the match. Although the end was a loss for his team, the Street Profits managed to advance to the next round. However, this moment truly became highlight-worthy for many fans who looked in disbelief.

Have an interesting take?

Neck injuries surely can be painful, ask Brock Lesnar who broke his next while performing a shooting star press from the top rope. A move that he has since retired from his arsenal ever since he couldn’t time his landing and, rather than falling perfectly on his opponent, he landed on his neck. So fans truly wondered how painful this landing would’ve been for Crews.

However, the most common reaction by many fans was the concern for the WWE superstar. We all have witnessed freak neck-related accidents in the WWE. Droz is one name that would come to the minds of many older WWE fans who know about the 1999 in-ring accident featuring the then-WWE superstar. Coincidentally, that match too took place in an edition of SmackDown as Droz faced D’Lo Brown. Brown’s running power slam was botched as he couldn’t get a proper grip on Droz, not providing enough lift that eventually led the WWE superstar to land on his neck. Paralyzing him for life. However, seeing that Crews managed to finish the match surely proves that he might’ve survived this freak landing unscathed. Though fans surely would not want to see more of this.
