As WWE gets ready for its upcoming PLEs No Mercy and Fastlane, one must not forget the havoc caused by WWE Payback. In an event filled with surprises and marked by the appearance of John Cena, fans witnessed a special night. However, it wasn’t the leader of the Cenation who emerged as the biggest victor of the night.

Now, in a recent update, Cody Rhodes has triumphed over Cena to achieve an astonishing personal milestone, proving why he’s the top babyface in WWE.

Cody Rhodes surpasses John Cena

WWE delivered a captivating show in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last week. Despite not having big names, like Roman Reigns and others, the event created incredible records.

The hype delivered as Payback’s viewership was up by 36% versus its previous record, which was set in 2016. In addition, it also broke merchandise records, with merchandise sales going up by 182% with the previous record set in 2017.

With such a special feat being achieved by the company under Triple H, two superstars have decided to add to their own personal accomplishments. According to Fightful Select, Cody Rhodes topped the list of individual superstars selling merchandise. In second place, trailing behind him is the 16-time champion.

This truly is a surreal moment for Rhodes, who toppled Cena, months after Cena passed the torch to the star on an episode of Raw. However, Cena still has plenty of time to change that equation and give stiff competition since he’s a regular feature for SmackDown from now on. Nonetheless, the two superstars produced epic moments on the show.

Cena and Rhodes made a statement at Payback

WWE announced Cena to be the special host for the event and he did not disappoint. The former world champion made his presence felt by inserting himself in a match between LA Knight and The Miz as a special guest referee.

While fans criticized his performance, he still managed to stir the pot with his intense showdown with Knight. As for The American Nightmare, he appeared on the Grayson Waller Effect for an interview.

Even though it was odd seeing him not wrestle, he arguably produced the biggest moment of the show when he called Jey Uso back to WWE. Though there’s mutual respect between them, it’s still a huge milestone for Rhodes to defeat the veteran in a major area.
