The past year was one of great upheaval and groundbreaking events in the world of pro wrestling. Vince McMahon stepped down as Chairman of WWE and almost a month before that AEW held an event with New Japan Pro Wrestling aptly termed ‘Forbidden Door.’ It saw some top names from NJPW fight it out against AEW stars, which was a refreshing sight. AEW owner Tony Khan hyped up the event as kicking down the proverbial forbidden door in pro wrestling.
Although the NJPW-AEW partnership was a big deal, the Khan-led company has collaborated with other wrestling promotions as well. In a recent interview, Tony Khan talked about a possible Wrestling World Cup involving various wrestling companies. He also shared his thoughts on whether he will be open to working with those in charge of WWE.

The emergence of AEW has ended WWE’s monopoly of the pro wrestling business in North America. In order to expand their horizons and bring their product to new audiences, AEW teamed up with NJPW last year for the Forbidden Door pay-per-view. Fans got to see the likes of Jay White, Kazuchika Okada, Hiroshi Tanahashi, and many more stars of Japanese wrestling at the event. This has further satiated their appetite for more such events in the future.
Moreover, during NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 17, stars from AEW as well as WWE were featured on the match card. There is a growing desire among fans to see talent crossover happen on a more regular basis. NJPW’s current IWGP World Heavyweight Champion Kazuchika Okada also echoed these sentiments and said he would like pro wrestling to have a ‘world cup’ between different companies. Speaking on the Battleground podcast, Tony Khan talked about Okada’s idea and working with WWE and Triple H.
Khan said, “I’ve got experience working with different promotions and promoting angles, matches, and storylines across different companies. He claimed although it could be challenging, they put on the best PPV of last year in Forbidden Door. Khan continued, “There are challenges to putting on an event like that, and getting the matches set, but it’s certainly something I would be open to. I’m open to working with anybody in pro wrestling. You never know.”
It seems Tony Khan would have no qualms about working with any wrestling promotion out there. The only question remains whether WWE would ever play ball. They have eased up on the restrictions they usually have with Luke Gallows, allowed to wrestle at Wrestle Kingdom 17 despite being under a WWE contract. We also saw Mickie James participating in the Women’s Royal Rumble last year while being under contract at Impact Wrestling! and even wore her Knockouts title belt to the ring.
