The former WWE Superstar Chris Jericho claims that Vince McMahon wasted $2.5millions purchasing the WCW. According to Jericho, Mr. McMahon and the company could have done great things with the WCW Invasion angle. But before that happens, Vince McMahon demolished the WCW.
The WWF and WCW battled in intense competition for years to become the number one wrestling organization globally. The rival company attempted several efforts to dethrone the WWF. Finally, however, Mr. McMahon swooped in and drove the final nail into the coffin by purchasing the WCW.

The six-time world champion Jericho was invited as a special guest on the latest edition of The Kurt Angle Show.
Chris Jericho on why the Invasion angle was important for Vince McMahon
The co-host, Paul Bromwell, asked Le Champion about Vince Mcmahon’s decision to short-run the WCW Invasion angle. Chris Jericho noted that the WWE Owner, The Big Man, could have played out multiple things with an invasion angle, but he squashed his rivals.
Jericho mentioned, “Yes, there’s a million things, they [WWE] could have run the Invasion pay-per-view for a year. The Invasion pay-per-view was the highest payoff I ever got in the WWE, besides two or three WrestleMania’s. I was in 12 WrestleManias; it beat 9 of them. That’s how big it was; it was a giant check.”
The Olympic Gold medalist Kurt Angle and Chris Jericho agreed that Invasion PPV was the fourth-highest PPV in history. When Vince purchased the WCW, he spent a total of $4.2M on purchasing the rival company.
However, he bought the name and logo for $2.5M while he bought the WCW video library for $1.7M.
Did Mr. McMahon’s spending $2.5M on the WCW pay off well?
We can predict that Mr. McMahon wasted $2.5M because he could have done a lot with the WCW, but he did nothing after the Invasion angle that culminated at the namesake PPV.
Chris Jericho imagines if The Big Man had continued to play around Invasion angle for a year, that definitely would have taken off.
“What if that was the first one and then you went going? Vince wasn’t interested! He’d been at war with WCW for so long, he bought it, he got a big blow-off from it, and he said you [WCW] are done. And that was his goal. He wants to kill it, squash it, end it, done, that’s what he did,” Le Champion added.

Although, out of Mr. McMahon’s $4.2M spent on the WCW purchase, $1.7M is profitable. Because the video library purchased at that time is now part of the WWE Network, which signed a billionaire dollar contract with Peacock.
