The biggest news of 2022 in the wrestling world was the retirement of WWE’s chairman, Vince McMahon. This came as a seismic shock to wrestling fans to whom WWE was synonymous with the name of Vince McMahon.
After all, he had led the company from a territorial promotion to a global juggernaut with close to 50 years in charge of the company. WWE had known no man at the helm but Vinnie Mac.
That changed last year, but ever since his exit, there have been murmurs of his possible return to the company. Now a recent report has revealed that McMahon is plotting a WWE comeback for a different purpose.

After McMahon stepped down as CEO last year, his daughter Stephanie McMahon took over his position along with co-CEO Nick Khan. But now Vince McMahon not only wishes to return to his empire but also sell it off.
According to a report in Wall Street Journal, Vince McMahon is looking to return to WWE and conduct a sale for the company. The report details that McMahon has told WWE that he will elect himself and two former co-presidents and directors to the board.
It is to be noted that McMahon still holds majority voting power within the company. However, he would still require three other directors to vacate their positions on the board.
Last month he tried to approach the WWE board of directors over a return, but they rebuffed him. The WSJ report confirms that McMahon intends to return in order to sell the company.
Who could buy WWE from Vince McMahon?
WWE is an attractive project with a worldwide established fan base. The sports entertainment promotion recently recorded its first year of over $1 billion in revenue in 2021.
With a market value of over $5 billion and a massive digital library, many big companies could be interested in buying the pro wrestling promotion. Here we take a look at some billion-dollar companies that could end up owning WWE.
1. Disney
Even before Vince McMahon left WWE, Disney was believed to be a potential buyer for WWE. The $167 billion worth mass media company already has a slew of world-renowned franchises on its streaming platform and could add WWE to its ranks.
They also have their hands in combat sports, as they own an 80 percent stake in ESPN which airs UFC. As Disney is itself a world-recognized brand, having WWE on its platform will only magnify its profits.
2. Comcast
WWE already enjoys a partnership with one of Comcast’s networks. In 2021, they sold their WWE Network streaming rights to NBCUniversal’s Peacock.
Comcast is the parent company of NBC Universal. In fact, a few months ago there were talks of Comcast being a potential buyer for WWE, but their lack of owning intellectual property like some other companies could be a downside.
Still, with a net worth of $158 billion, they can surely be in the mix if the opportunity arose to own a digital treasure like WWE.
3. Fox
Another company that has ties with WWE. Fox is already the home of WWE SmackDown and could be interested in buying the company once it’s up for sale. However, with its close to $16 billion net worth, it could be tricky for them to complete the purchase on their own.
A partnership with a company like Paramount Global, valued at $16 billion, could lead to a deal. But perhaps it is a far-fetched notion for them.
4. Warner Bros.
Warner Bros. Discovery is a mass media empire with a net worth of $25.2 billion. The production house already owns a number of digital IPs and it will make sense for it to go after WWE if the chance presents itself.

They could use their reputation and extensive marketing to further enhance their profits from owning a massive property like WWE.
There will be some time before we see Vince McMahon return to WWE. It may not be even as straightforward as it appears at the moment.
