Who doesn’t know John Cena? The wrestling legend is a revered name in WWE and is now a respectable Hollywood star. Aside from his success in wrestling and Hollywood, John Cena is a living and breathing meme largely due to his iconic catchphrase, “You Can’t See Me”. Those are the four words that will forever be synonymous with the 16-time World Champion. 

In a recent Instagram post, ESPN posted a light-hearted video of a fan getting a John Cena tattoo. In addition, NBA’s most lethal shooting coach joined in on the fun. This alone goes to show how timeless John Cena’s legendary catchphrase is.

ESPN praises an invisible John Cena tattoo

The worlds of sports entertainment and professional sports mix again because of John Cena. As mentioned, ESPN took to Instagram to post a video of a fan getting a John Cena tattoo. After the final stages of the tattoo process, the artist wipes out the lather to reveal the tattoo. And the result was just about what anybody would expect. It was an invisible John Cena.

This led the fans to get creative in the comment section. Furthermore, NBA’s shooting coach, Chris Matthews, also hilariously expressed his surprise over the artistry. He wrote, “Clean tattoo. This is spot on,” with fire emojis. Matthews’ playful remark got the fans to engage in delightful banter in the comments section.

Anyway, John Cena’s transition from pro wrestling to mainstream media has extended the reach of his famed catchphrase. Not only has it convinced the fans that he is invisible, but it has also transformed the hand wave gesture into a prevailing trend.

The “You can’t see me” gimmick has immortalized John Cena. In essence, it is a gesture that conveys self-assuredness accompanied by a hand wave in front of the face. But how did it come to be?

During an appearance on Graham Norton Show, John Cena revealed that the gesture was inspired by a dance step seen in 50 Cent’s music video, In Da Club. But the move in the music video was slightly different, as Tony Yayo does not wave his hand. Cena went on to relay that his brother dared him to do it on TV. 

John Cena accepted the challenge and added a wave so that fans in the nosebleed seats were able to see what he was doing. Cena then gave it the name, “You Can’t See Me”. Hence, a timeless meme came to life.
