Black Adam has been a dream project for Dwayne Johnson for nearly a decade. Warner Brothers had offered the movie to The Rock back in 2014 to appear in Shazam. However, DJ had some other plans for the character, which delayed Black Adam’s on-screen debut.
Johnson wanted to do a solo movie for Black Adam and talked with the studio. Hence, the movie took too long to be made, and recently DJ shared his insights on it.

While talking with The New York Times recently, Dwayne Johnson took the responsibility for the Black Adam movie delay. He shared about the event that happened while he talked with Warner Bros. for The Teth Adam’s solo movie.
Johnson said, “I did have that option when I started discussing this with Warner Bros. almost 15 years ago. I appreciated the mythology behind the characters and their connection. But I always knew in my heart that I was Black Adam.”
He added, “It was convoluted and it wasn’t serving them both properly. I made a call to the people running Warner Bros. at the time and I said we should separate these two so they could tell their own origin stories, and that’s what we did.” (H/T Wrestling Inc.)

The studio had shared the movie script for Shazam with the WWE legend six or seven years ago. However, The Great One felt it would be great if Shazam and Black Adam have their individual origin movies before clashing together in one.
How did Dwayne Johnson react when Warner Bros. confirmed Shazam in 2019?
After DJ raised his concerns about revolving around the solo movies for Black Adam, the studio went ahead with Shazam first. They confirmed the movie to release in 2019 and actors Zachary Levi and Asher Angel played Billy Batson / Shazam.

However, The Rock seemed to be upset, but he was fine with the decision. He said, “It worked against me in the moment because they went with ‘Shazam!’ first. I said, ‘OK, not a problem.'”
The fans loved Shazam, but some of them at the time wished Black Adam also would have been added to the film. However, Johnson’s suggestion for separate films “prolonged and delayed the process” of getting his Black Adam project to the screen.
