For over a decade, Dwayne Johnson was developing how to debut the Black Adam character in various versions of the DCEU. But, ultimately, The Rock’s final word brought the mystical wizard to DC Comics.
Dwayne Johnson was the man that affected the split of Black Adam and Shazam movies into two!
During an exclusive interview with Comic Book, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson opened up about the original plans of DC’s Black Adam. Earlier, the development process had Black Adam and Shazam characters in a single movie as their origin story. However, The Rock realized both characters are massive and opposite in tone to working in a single film.
“The script was delivered. When we all read the script, I immediately felt like we have to separate these two movies. We have to honor Shazam! and that origin story and what that is and what that can be for the fans, and then we also have to tell our story, too, as well.”

The former WWE Champion believed in separating Shazam and Black Adam, with most of the world not knowing who Black Adam was. Until and unless you weren’t a serious comic book fan. It was important for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to separate them and tell each story, respectively.
The plans for the debut of Black Adam’s big screen have shifted over the years. Even the producers of this film, Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia, were on board with Dwayne Johnson’s decision. However, they waited until The Rock made a big decision over one phone call.
A phone call by The Rock that changed the hierarchy of power in DC Comics
As per this interview, Dwayne Johnson was the final key maker because producer Beau Flynn believed in the solid commercial instincts of The Rock. The wrestler-turned actor’s instincts were extraordinary, but he was right, according to the producer.
“He called Hiram and I; he just said, ‘Brothers, we’re gonna make Black Adam. We’re gonna tell this story. It’s so big and so important,’ and that was it. Again, we were deep in it and developing that script with both of them, and there’s a reason why sometimes in our business sometimes, you have to keep moving forward, and sometimes the business tells you.”
