Just weeks ago, Dwayne Johnson was down and out as reports emerged that his co-owned league has lost millions of dollars. The XFL, a minor American football league reportedly lost $60 million after their first season under new management. But Johnson cannot be kept pinned down for long. Recent developments reveal his role in a new venture.

Reports show that the 51-year-old is backing golf legend Tiger Woods in his endeavor. Johnson’s help, however, is likely to stall the progress of a new brand in the future.

Tiger Woods is undoubtedly the biggest name in the golfing world. Getting him involved in a new venture will not only lend credibility to it but also attract other players and investors. That is exactly what the LIV Golf league tried. Backed by Saudi Arabia Public Investment Fund, LIV Golf revolutionized the golfing world after its inaugural season in 2022. While it managed to garner support from note-worthy players like Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka and Bubba Watson, Woods declined.

According to reports, the winner of 15 majors, rejected an offer between $700 million to $800 million from the league. Instead, he partnered with fellow golfer Rory McIlroy and former NBC Sports’ president Mike McCarley to form the TMRW Sports Group. In partnership with PGA Tour, they’ve launched TGL, a primetime golf league, set to have its inaugural season in January.

Dwayne Johnson is one of the many celebrity investors in the league, according to CNBC. He has joined hands with tennis legend Serena Williams, NBA icon Steph Curry, Shaquille O’Neal, MLB’s Shohei Ohtani, singer/actor Justin Timberlake and others.

The new golf league will be “fusing advanced tech and live action in primetime”, according to its official website. Players will be competing in a team format, akin to LIV Golf, but TGL will have six teams as opposed to its counterpart’s 12. The number of holes is also less in the Dwayne Johnson-supported league – 18, compared to 54 holes in the Saudi-backed endeavor. Therefore, McIlroy and Woods’ Golf league will render faster match results, making the gameplay more exciting.

Woods’ new venture looks promising already. But Dwayne Johnson’s investment in LIV Golf brings Woods closer to settling a score.

Dwayne Johnson’s support of Tiger Woods’ golf league will help latter answer betrayal

As reported above, the TGL was likely to have been formed to counter LIV Golf. The Saudi-backed league was embroiled in antitrust lawsuits regarding the PGA Tour in 2022. This was a reason the PGA Tour collaborated with TMRW Sports Group to float the new league. It was in perfect sync with the prime players as McIlroy, a 4-time majors winner, has been vocal against LIV.

But in a drastic turn of events, the PGA Tour squashed all its pending litigation against LIV Golf as it announced a merger a few weeks ago. This was a blatant betrayal of trust as now the PGA Tour has shaken the very hands it wanted to sever just months ago.

On the other hand, it is believed that the presence of Johnson and other prominent faces from various sports and sectors will help the TGL get the support that LIV Golf doesn’t enjoy so far. Whether or not this theory materializes is for the future to disclose.
