Cody Rhodes is known for his long and illustrious pro wrestling career. Since his debut, he has been a part of various promotions. One of these included New Japan Pro Wrestling. At the Fastlane 2023 event, commentator Micheal Cole brought up his days at NJPW out of nowhere but might have confused his role there.
Micheal Cole confused about Cody Rhodes’ past
It sure looks like legendary commentator Cole confused Cody Rhodes’ time at NJPW. During the tag team match between Cody Rhodes with Jey Uso vs. The Judgment Day’s Finn Balor and Damian Priest, the two former members of the Bullet Club came face to face. When Cody Rhodes and Finn Balor came in the ring for the face-off, Cole said on commentary, “The first leader of the Bullet Club, Finn Bálor facing another leader of the Bullet Club, Cody Rhodes.” This has led to an online mockery.

To this, his fellow commentator also joined him saying, “Get those Twitter points Cole.”, implying that this will be a talked about thing on the internet for a couple of days. During his time at NJPW, The American Nightmare was a part of The Bullet Club, but he was never appointed as the leader of the faction. On the other hand, Balor, who used to go by the ring name Prince Devitt was the first leader of the stable.

Even though Cody Rhodes is known for both his time at AEW and WWE, fans know very little about his time at NJPW
The American Nightmare was born
In 2016, Rhodes made his debut at NJPW after leaving WWE. At that time, Rhodes wanted to explore himself and decided to be a part of various other circuits. Here, he joined the stable Bullet Club. Even though he was a popular star of the stable, he found more luck as an independent wrestler on the circuit. It was at this time, that Rhodes decided to don The American Nightmare persona, revamping things and making a new mark. Even though he and Balor shared the same stable, they never had the opportunity to work together.

Finn Balor made his debut at NJPW back in 2006. He was known by his other ring name, Prince Devitt. Although at WWE he is known as a heel, he was a babyface for the majority of his career at NJPW. He turned heel on his tag team partner in 2013. This was just a year before he would leave the circuit. His last match at NJPW was the April’s Invasion attack in 2014. He then made his way to WWE NXT a few months later in September of 2014.
