Everybody is aware of the original XFL, a football league launched by former WWE chief Vince McMahon. But even before that, he had plans to conquer the bodybuilding industry. The WBF was the newest venture by Vince McMahon to enter the world of bodybuilding in 1991. To take the second WBF event to the next level, the former CEO of WWE signed Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno to a multi-million dollar contract.
Ferrigno even appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson at the time to talk about the second season of WBF. Moreover, he also stated the WBF had the “strictest drug testing in all of professional sports.”
However, it is not true as WBF never did any drug testing until 1992. Before kick-starting the second event, Mr. McMahon announced that WBF would have mandatory drug testing of all the stars who were taking part.
This rule by Mr. McMahon made Ferrigno’s statement on the Tonight Show vague. Nevertheless, the Incredible Hulk star didn’t take part in the second season as he legitimately needed carpal tunnel surgery.
Also, the second event of the WBF was a failure, as it only received around 3,000 pay-per-view buys. Vince McMahon’s dream of creating a bodybuilding organization with an element of pro wrestling didn’t work after he made drug testing compulsory in the second WBF event.
