CM Punk and Drew McIntyre can’t move past their rivalry no matter what, but they also can’t wrestle each other either. On last week’s Raw, we saw the Second City Saint make a surprise appearance on the red brand in search of his arch-nemesis and left frustrated upon not finding him anywhere. The WWE cameras showed The Scotsman leave the place a few seconds before Punk’s car pulled over.

Some parts of the WWE Universe have expressed their frustration at the ongoing storyline due to the medical limitations that won’t allow the duo to settle their differences inside the ring. Nevertheless, the Stamford-based promotion continues to further the feud in creative ways. However, their latest attempt during Monday Night Raw didn’t find favor amongst a former WWE star who thought the segment lacked originality because of its borrowed nature.

CM Punk’s storied past with Tony Khan’s promotion has reared its ugly head from time to time since his monumental return to WWE during the Survivor Series PLE. While he was welcomed with open arms by many, stars like Seth Rollins and Drew McIntyre chose to publicly air their hostility, setting up an intense storyline. As far as Mclntyre is concerned, WWE pitched his constant rants and antics against The Second City Saint with utmost care and precision.

During the last week Raw as well, the way he stormed out of his car to have a confrontation with Raw general manager and sneakily left before Punk arrived, only stabilized the creativity of the segment. That said, it still wasn’t enough.

As per WWE legend Bully Ray, the segment isn’t original, rather it’s AEW-driven. During the latest episode of Busted Open Radio, the veteran noted, ”Got to give credit to where credit is due though. This shot of starting in the back and working their way out to the arena. I saw the BCC in AEW doing this, weeks before I saw the WWE was doing it. WWE is taking it to the next level, but you got to give a little credit where credit’s due. I liked what the BCC were doing with it first.”

However, regardless of the plagiarized nature of the segment, Eric Bischoff defended the current CM Punk-Drew Mclntyre trajectory.

WWE continuing to escalate the heat between two top-tier superstars without not setting up a proper feud might upset some critics, but not Eric Bischoff. The WWE Hall of Famer noted in his 83 Weeks podcast that he’s fervently looking forward to enjoying the intense match that has been brewing for a while. He thinks the storyline is moving at a fascinating pace that itself emerges as a treasure trove, where the match will prove to be the cherry on the top. The emotional engagement of the storyline is what impressed him the most.

With Punk’s reported recovery time in mind, it seems the imminent feud can take place around SummerSlam. But given Drew McIntyre’s unspecified status, the predicted timeline again falls into question. What’s your take on the AEW criticism of Drew McIntyre-CM Punk Raw segment? Let us know in the comments.
